Oh hey! *waves excitedly*
We've been working hard behind the scenes here at the Band to bring you a most special gift for the new year. We've been working on creating a calendar. I KNOW. It's very exciting indeed.
We knew we wanted to feature some of our very own Band members, but we also wanted to feature some of the conditions that we are the face of. Because here at the Band we are the face of many things, and we want people to know that we're not afraid to own those things and talk about them.
In addition to asking 13 folks to take a pretty picture for us, we also sat down with them to discuss what condition each is the face of, and what they have to say about it.
Introducing our very own Heather, who is up in December 2013 and representing the face of Adoption.
What brought you to the Band?
I am honored to be a part of the Band - and a Brain Behind the Band! As a professional nurse, I found the site to be a valuable resource for those who look for advice, inspiration, and encouragement daily. As me, I find it to be the source of a lot of hope...and isn't that what we ALL need?
How has this condition changed your life?
Adoption rocked my world--in good and in not good ways. Before Jack, I was afraid of those who were "different" than myself. I've learned to educate and to advocate for my son. But mostly, I have found an inner strength that I didn't know I possessed. It's not for the faint of heart, but your heart will grow--in so many different ways!
What advice would you give to others about your condition?
Ask questions. Be educated. Do not go in to adoption blind. There will be days of pain and grief. There will be days of heartache. In the end, you will hold in your arms your very own future...and THAT is a beautiful thing.
What myth about your condition do you wish people would stop believing?
Adoption is not the "dead end" to infertility. Adoption is not perfect or without fault. It is difficult. It is costly--emotionally, socially, and in the true sense of the word (even if you adopt from the state). There are always questions--be prepared to answer them with humility and love.
What is your favorite band or musician?
I've been madly in love with Michael Crawford since 1987. I'd even let him eat crackers in the bed.
If you had one day to do anything, with no limitations, what would you do?
I would give my day up to my son...I'd want to see him eat food, walk without falling, dance in the rain, play with other kids, not wear a mask to visit the grocery store (you know, be "typical" for a day).
What is your favorite dessert?
I don't like sweets at all. I'd rather down a jar of olives or some pickled veggies. I know, I should get kicked out of the girl's club.
